Daan Noordenbos

French massacre: Ideas are more important than calculation

In this blitz game I played a very intuitive sequence of sacrifices. My justification? I had already seen most the ideas in old analysis.

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.♘c3 ♘f6 4.♗g5 ♗e7 5.e5 ♘fd7 6.h4 h6 7.♗xe7 ♕xe7 8.♕g4 O-O 9.f4 c5 10.♘f3 ♘c6 11.O-O-O a6 12.♖h3!? The most played move, but inaccurate

12.♘e2 More sensible, this pretty much forces black to trade. cxd4 13.♘fxd4 ♘c5 14.♕f3 f6 15.exf6 ♖xf6 16.♘xc6 bxc6 17.g4 With dynamic equality. f5?!

12…cxd4! 13.♘e2

13.♘xd4 ♘xd4 14.♖xd4 f6 The rook on h3 is poorly placed, some e6-e5 push is going to be a bother. 13…♘c5 14.♘g3 A very unnatural but necessary move.

14.♘exd4 ♘e4-+ 14…f5 15.exf6 ♖xf6 16.♘e5 ♘e4 17.♘xe4 dxe4-/+ 13.♕g6 13…♘xd4?? Black tries to be clever, this eliminates Ne2.

13…♕f7 14.♕xf7+ ♔xf7 15.h5 Practice has shown that this is more than pleasant for white. cxd4 16.♘xd4 ♘c5 17.g4+- Critical

13…cxd4 14.♘g5?! A huge mess, but neither side can force through. Not so many annotations as I will not pretend to understand these computer lines of only moves..

14.♘e2 What black wanted to avoid. 14…hxg5 15.hxg5 ♘dxe5 Otherwise black loses

15…♕e8 16.♕h7+ ♔f7 17.♗e2! ♔e7 18.♗h5 ♖f7 19.♗xf7 ♕xf7 20.g6 ♕f8 21.♘e2+- 16.fxe5 ♘xe5 17.♕h5 dxc3 18.♗e2 This much is forced. ♕b4 Now white has nothing more than a draw.

18…♖d8 This will lead to a long variation 19.♕h8+ ♔f7 20.♗h5+ g6 21.♗xg6+ ♔xg6 22.♕h5+ ♔g7 23.♕h7+ ♔f8 24.♕h8+ ♔f7 25.♕xe5 ♕xg5+ 26.♔b1 White still has a good attack, but the most he can get is a pleasant endgame. ♖g8 27.♕c7+ ♔e8 28.♖h7 ♕f6 29.♖dh1 a5 30.♖1h6 ♕f8 31.♕e5 ♖a6 32.♖h8 cxb2 33.♖xg8 ♕xg8 34.♖h8 ♕xh8 35.♕xh8+= And black probably has a simple fortress 19.bxc3 ♕f4+ 20.♔b1 ♗d7 21.♖d4 ♕f2 22.g6 ♘xg6 23.♕xg6 ♕xe2 24.♖dh4 ♕f1+ 25.♔b2 ♕b5+ 26.♖b4 ♕e2 27.♖bh4 14.♘g5! An idea I have played a few times already. However this game has the most pleasing finish. hxg5 15.hxg5 ♖d8

15…♕e8 16.♕h7+ ♔f7 17.g6+ ♔e7 18.♕h4+ ♘f6 19.exf6+ ♖xf6 20.♖e3 Here white has a good attack for 1-2 pawns. White is objectively winning but it requires some violent moves to prove. ♔d6

20…♕d7 21.♘xd5+!! ♕xd5 22.♕h7 ♕d8 23.♕xg7+ ♔d6 24.c3 21.♘xd5 ♔xd5 22.c3 ♔c6 23.cxd4 cxd4 24.♖xd4 16.♖xd4!? Going for glory.

16.♕h5 ♘f8 17.g6 ♘xg6 18.♕xg6 Completely winning ♘f8

16…cxd4 17.♕h5 ♘f8 18.g6 ♘xg6 19.♕xg6 17.♕h5 cxd4 18.g6 ♘xg6 19.♕xg6 dxc3

19…♗d7 20.♗e2 ♕f7 21.♖h8+

19…♕e8 Now white needs a bit more precision 20.♕h7+ 20…♔f7

20…♔f8 21.♘e2 ♕f7 22.♘xd4+- 21.♘e2 21…d3

21…♕g8 22.♕h5+ g6 23.♕g5+- 22.♘d4 ♗d7 23.♖h6 ♔f8 24.♖g6 ♕f7 25.♗xd3 20.♗e2!! This a very important idea, as one would realise if they played through all the variations. The first time I could have played this Ng5 sacrifice I missed this Be2 move which was critical. cxb2+ 21.♔b1 ♗d7

21…♕b4 22.♕h7+ ♔f8 23.♕h8+ ♔f7 24.♗h5+ g6 25.♗xg6+ ♔xg6 26.♕f6#

21…♕f7 22.♖h8+ ♔xh8 23.♕xf7 22.♗h5 ♗e8 23.♕h7+ ♔xh7 24.♗f7+ ♕h4 25.♖xh4# What are the take aways from this game? Ng5 is often a playable sacrifice in this Alekhine Chatard if the Be2 resource is avaliable. 1-0
